11:02 A.M.

“Where have you been?” Theo snapped at his brother when Abe walked into his office.

“Working,” Abe replied dryly.

“On this case I hope.” He didn’t mean to take out his frustrations on his brother, but his instincts were saying that something wasn’t right, that lingering feeling in the pit of his stomach that hinted at something bad happening. He couldn’t shake the feeling no matter how hard he tried, and he didn’t think it was because of the current complications in his friendship with Maggie.

“Do you really have to ask?” Abe dropped down into the chair at his desk and scrubbed a hand over his face. His oldest brother looked tired, and Theo wondered whether he had been working this case through the night. Meadow had gotten mixed up in this, and he knew Abe wouldn’t stop until the man who had put his fiancée and unborn baby in danger was caught, and it was unfair of him to challenge his brother like that and imply he wasn’t working this case hard enough.

Taking the seat on the other side of the perfectly organized desk, he rubbed at his tired eyes. It wasn’t that he was unused to sleepless nights. There had been plenty of times both when he was serving his country and as a firefighter when he had stayed up for days on end with little to no sleep, but this constant worrying and turmoil and confusion was wearing him out.

“Sorry, Abe,” he finally said. “I know that you’re taking this case seriously, it’s just that …” he trailed off because he wasn’t really sure how to finish the sentence. How did he explain everything that was going on between him and Maggie when he didn’t even understand it? While he and Amethyst had never really been a couple he still felt like he was on the rebound, and Maggie had been through a traumatic experience and needed to feel like she wasn’t alone, that was hardly the basis to build a relationship on, and that was assuming either of them even wanted anything long term.

Abe’s assessing hazel eyes studied him for a long moment, and Theo was sure he was about to get a lecture about not hurting Maggie, since he knew that Abe and Meadow both knew that they’d slept together, but instead Abe went all business. “We have a suspect, a sixteen-year-old kid who was staying with his foster parents and foster sister. His name is Mike Voight, and he comes from a messed up family and …”

Now it was Abe’s turn to trail off, and Theo straightened in his chair. He knew that his brother didn’t have to be telling him this, he wasn’t a cop, he wasn’t part of this investigation, and yet at the same time he was at the very center of this. He had walked through the fire at the hotel to rescue Maggie, and he’d been there at the car explosion. “And what?” he prompted.

“And we have some concerns about the foster family.
